On 8 September, Annekatrin Hoppe and Dominik Royé from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin represented AgRimate at the 54th Congress of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie (DGPs) e.V. in Luxembourg with a poster presentation.
They presented findings from interviews with olive grove owners in Andalusia, focusing on migrant seasonal workers’ recruitment, training, and task mobility.
A key insight: migrant seasonal workers (SWs) mostly receive no formal training and learn on the job through observation, demonstrations, and verbal instructions.They also found that migrant SWs primarily remain in seasonal harvesting tasks, with limited mobility into more skilled activities such as pruning, which is mainly carried out by farm owners and local workers.
Against the background of an ageing agricultural workforce and increasing labour shortages, these findings contribute to the discussion on future workforce sustainability and the role of migrant seasonal labour.
